Let’s talk hair ladies!! Let me preface this with, I am always trying to do the least amount possible to my hair. I do not like taking the time to do my hair. I have a lot of hair. I always have. I have a lot of thick hair so I always feel like it takes so much time and energy to do it. You feel me, haha.
With all that being said, I usually love to have beautifully curled hair, every single day. Now that’s not my reality. I am always throwing it up in a top know and when it was longer I was no stranger to the messy pony. Since I cut my hair short, I have had to actually do my hair a lot more. I’m not mad at it, I have just found some ways that require a lot less up keep while still looking presentable.
Shampoo & Conditioner
I did as whole blog post about what I use for Shampoo and Conditioner. You can read that HERE. I really do believe that what shampoo and conditioner you use will make a world of difference. That’s why I love Formulate. It caters to my specific needs and my hair has never been healthier! Again, you can read all about why I love it so much HERE.
Along with my shampoo and conditioner, I also use a purple shampoo once every couple of weeks. My absolute favorite purple shampoo is this one. Like I said once every couple of weeks, or when I feel like my blonde isn’t as bright as I would like I use this. I wash my hair with my regular shampoo, and then lather the purple shampoo in my hair and let it sit for about 5 minutes. I don’t go any longer than 5 minutes because my hair will turn purple. When that happens it always fades away after a couple washes so don’t worry. One bottle lasts forever so I usually only have to repurchase once a year!
After I have washed my hair…
So I am always planning our my wash day according to my schedule of events. Anyone else do it this way. After I wash it, I towel dry and then do one of two things. If I am actually going somewhere that day I will blow dry my hair. I use this blow dryer and it has worked great for the past 5 years. I don’t do any round brushing, although I really want to start, and I just use a simple conair brush to brush my hair. Once it is dry I usually use my Chi Flat Iron to straighten/curl my hair. I will do an updated tutorial on how I use my flat iron soon. If I don’t use my flat iron then I curl my hair with my FAVORITE curling iron HERE. I have some tutorials on how I use it on the blog. I will work on an updated video. If I am drying my hair the day I wash it, I will never leave it straight. I always curl it one of those two ways. When I leave it straight I feel like it gets oily so much quicker.
If I am not going anywhere and don’t have to actually do my hair, I will always allow my hair to air dry. This is so good for the health of your hair. When we moved to California, I stopped blow drying my hair almost all together. I went at least 4 months without blow drying and only air drying, and it helped the health of my hair so much!
Since I already talked about the tools I use, let’s talk products.
I don’t have a big collection of products. I have about 3 that I always keep on hand. Those include:
Not very exciting right. I don’t use hairspray, unless I am doing my hair for an even of some sort. I absolutely love my living proof dry shampoo! It is amazing, if you haven’t tried it yet. I love my texture spray for that messy curl look too.
How do I go so long between washes????
Did I already mention I don’t love washing/doing my hair. That’s why I love going so long between washes! Naturally my hair is NOT oily. I will start with that. So I can only speak to what works for me and how my hair is. With that being said. You do have to sort of train your hair. When you wash your hair you are washing away all the natural oils that are produced. So if you are washing your hair every single day then your naturally producing oils every single day. So if you skip a day, you are still producing those oils our of memory. That’s why we have to train our bodies!
Curling my hair the day of washing it is one of the ways I can go longer between washes.
At night when I sleep, I always pull my hair into a high pony or bun, these are the elastics I swear by! Not only do my Invisibobbles tie my hair up with zero creases, they actually hold my hair up all day/night long! They come in all colors, and I personally love the clear ones.
I try to not touch my hair as much as possible. The more touching the more oils your are adding to your hair.
I’m not sure if this next tip actually helps my hair not get oily or not, but I usually only brush it the day I wash and blow dry. After that I usually just run my fingers through it really lightly and quick and call it good. Now of course if it’s crazy tangled for some reason I will pull out the brush.
Dry shampoo is your friend. I usually don’t start using my dry shampoo until day 4 or 5. It really just depends. I spray it along my roots. I start with the center part, and then take sections and go down the top of my head along the roots. I will do a quick spray framing my face as well. Once I have sprayed the dry shampoo, I allow it to sit for 30 seconds to a minute. Once it has sat I use my fingers to massage the dry shampoo into my hair. This takes away all the white dusty look and really soaks up any of that oil that you want to get rid of.
Texture spray is amazing. Along with the dry shampoo, my texture spray also adds an element of grit to my hair. It always my hair to achieve that piecey look without look oily and dirty. Oh and did I mention it smells delicious. When I spray my texture spray and spray up and in the ends of my hair.
I think that that covers it. The only other question I got about hair, is how I control static and frizz. I don’t have any tips for that, I’m sorry! I haven’t really dealt with much static or even frizz, unless I’m in a different climate.
Stay tuned for some tutorials coming to Instagram and even the blog soon!
